The importance of lighting in interior design

Updated: Apr 7

Natural daylight is at its weakest in the UK at this time of the year.

Reliance on having a well-considered artificial lighting plan in our homes is the key to enabling us to perform simple tasks and create a comfortable atmosphere in the depths of winter.

Lighting is one of the primary elements in Interior Design and a main consideration when designing interior schemes. With careful thought and attention to detail, the lighting in your home can completely transform a room's look, feel and function.

Unfortunately, many homeowners often overlook the lighting in the home, treating it very much as an afterthought.

With no two projects ever the same, and because neither light nor colour is static - both changing throughout a day and over the seasons – as an Interior Designer, I consider the aspect of the room, the depth of natural light within the space, and how you and your family live in your home, to understand your lighting requirements.

A well-considered lighting can

·       Create focal points, enhancing specific features like shelving, joinery, pictures, doorways, or under countertops.

·       Alter a room's perceived dimensions, making it feel larger or smaller.

·       Change the look and feel of a room - warm lighting can make a room feel cosy and inviting, while task lighting helps focus light onto working surfaces.

A height-adjustable pendant light with a retractable cord is a good option over a kitchen table, offering you the flexibility to move the shade out of the way when you need to cast the light or lower and create a more intimate dining atmosphere.

If you want to avoid the cost and hassle of hiring tradespeople, the Laura Ashley Callaghan Plug-In Wall light is a good option. Its elegant, fluted glass shade produces a soft, diffused upward light, while also funnelling the light downward onto the task area.

A brass wall light with a glass shade is positioned to face downwards so it lights up the kitchen worktop and sink area.

If you feel the lighting in your home doesn't support the different ways you use your house, you might consider hiring an interior designer. They will spend time understanding your home requirements and make practical suggestions to improve functionality.
