My tips for creating useful home storage solutions

Home storage solutions in interior design aren't the most inspiring part of creating a beautiful home, but think about it, if you don't have plenty of good storage space, it makes the task of making the rest of your home beautiful, much trickier.

Here are my tips for creating useable storage solutions in any size home.

  1. Firstly, rather than making a storage space based on aesthetics, consider what you want to put in the space before you begin designing. For example, do you have long, bulky coats? or items that would benefit from being organised in boxes or baskets? How often do you need to access these items? and do you need to store other items without them getting in the way? Forethought will make it easier to ensure you have the right types and amounts of storage to function smoothly.

  2. Think outside the box. Consider the size of the space and how to make the best use of it. I had a huge area under the stairs that wasn't utlised properly. I needed storage for shoes, hats, coats, and the hoover. The space was larger than I needed for my storage needs. It made no sense to create a giant cupboard - the danger then was that it was unmanageable to keep tidy, becoming a dumping ground behind doors. I also wasn't keen for it to be just a set of doors in a corridor. My kids are now teenagers, but I thought about the future generations that might live here. How useful would a seat be for a child, with all their shoes in easy reach? The design featured a built-in seat with storage directly underneath.

  3. My final tip is to consider what else you need to make the space user-friendly. A big dark cave is not the answer to your storage solutions. As well as being planned with plenty of hanging and shelving, it needs to be well-lit, so you can find what you need. I didn't have electricity in my new cupboard, so I invested in motion sensor LED lights, which are easy to install, cost and energy-efficient. Well-considered storage space solutions will help you use the space more effectively, so you avoid your cupboards becoming full of forgotten items.
