In 2021, the share of households that private renters occupied was 18.5%*, which is without question a huge percentage of the housing market.

Decorating and furnishing a home when you're renting can pose a dilemma. You want the place to feel like yours, but you don’t want to spend your budget on decorating or furnishings if you’re not going to get your money back.

I've listed six budget-friendly interior design tips tips for renters below, showing you how you can make your rental place feel like home without being out of pocket.

Before you do anything to your rental you must check your rental agreement and speak to your landlord to clarify with them what they will or won’t allow you to do. It is always worth asking. If the place is looking tired it could be in the landlord’s interest to allow you to make some improvements. They may even contribute towards the cost of materials.

1. A Splash of Paint

Colour had a huge impact on our mood plus the ability to completely transform the look and feel of a room. A lick of paint is possibly the most cost-effective way to update a space. If you're required to restore the walls to the original colour when you hand the keys back, think carefully about selecting a shade that isn’t going to be too difficult to cover up again.

2. Removeable Wallpaper

If you're prepared to spend a little extra, wallpaper is a great way to transform a room. To keep costs down, select a feature wall rather than paper the whole room. Many manufacturers now offer their designs in a removable wallpaper or ‘peel and stick’ options - designed to be easy to remove without damaging the walls.

3. Furniture Rentals

If you don’t want the commitment of buying larger items such as sofas, tables, chairs, or beds there are companies now providing furniture rental services. You can rent a single item or a whole room full of furniture, with rental periods starting from as little as six months.

4. A Rug

Rugs are always a great option. You can just roll them up and take them with you. Rugs are an ideal way to zone different areas in an open plan or multi-function living space.

5. Plug in Wall Lights

The importance of tasks and ambient lighting has long been overlooked in many homes. The emergence of the wall-mounted plug-in light has been very exciting - bringing boutique lighting to the masses. With minimal DIY (all you should need is a drill), you can combine practicality and luxury. Best of all, when your tenancy ends, the lights fitting can be removed, the holes in the walls re-filled and the whole item is taken with you to your next home.

6. The Humble House Plant

The simplest and cheapest way to transform a room is to add a simple pot plant. As well as the health benefits of indoor plants, foliage in an eye-catching pot will instantly say ‘home’.
